An American football star has had a price put on his head after a shampoo company insured his hair for $1million (£650,000).
Troy Polamalu, 29, is a hard-hitting defender for the Pittsburg Steelers club.
On the football field he has attained the highest honours, twice winning the Super Bowl with the Steelers and being selected for the annual NFL all-star game five times in a row.
But Polamalu, who was born in the US but is of Samoan decent, is rapidly gaining notoriety for something other than his sporting prowess – his amazingly long hair.
It is 3ft long, frizzy and he claims not to have cut it in ten years. And those flowing locks stick out prominently from beneath the crash helmet Polamalu wears during games.
So it was little wonder that Polamalu attracted the attention of bosses at Procter & Gamble, the company that owns shampoo brand Head & Shoulders.
After a series of popular TV adverts promoting the product, P&G have decided to take out a $1 million Lloyd’s of London policy on the locks.
‘They’ve created the first ever insurance policy to protect his iconic mane for the entire NFL season,’ Procter & Gamble said in a statement.
Polamalu’s hair has been used to halt him in his tracks in gridiron many times, most famously when Kansas City Chiefs running back Larry Johnson yanked his ponytail after he intercepted a pass four years ago.
Neither Lloyd’s nor Procter & Gamble provided details of exactly what damage to his hair would trigger a claim on the insurance policy.
