Titan arum is the Indonesian plant that grows to a height of three meters, but this is not its main feature. The flowers of these plants have very unpleasant odor that resembles the smell of decaying bodies. Therefore, this plant was also named the “Corpse flower” or “Corpse plant”. The titan arum produces one of the largest flowering structures and one of the foulest odours in the plant kingdom. With its huge flowering structure rising up to three metres above the ground, and its single immense leaf, it certainly is a giant among plants, as its name suggests. The plant flowers only rarely, and Kew’s specimens regularly hit the headlines when they do.
Titan Arum uses its terrible smell to attract some special species of insects. Despite the stench, it is expected that a large number of people will be attending its flowering, very rare event that lasts only three to four days.
Flowering of American speciments is expected in early May.
