Ship repair, conversion and construction firm Drydocks World has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with BIG InvestConsult AG, a Swiss company representing Polish firm Deep Ocean Technology (DOT) which has developed highly innovative designs for an underwater hotel. The proposal still needs to be refined but currently suggests a Water Discus Hotel in Dubai with disc-shaped volumes both above and below the waterline.

Futuristic renderings of the concepts show modest bedroom units with generous panes of glass framing the vibrant underwater seascape of the Gulf. Twenty-one underwater two-person rooms are proposed for the hotel with privacy provided by curtains of varying transparency, an underwater diving centre with all necessary air locks and decompression chambers, and a spa, luscious garden and open terrace above the waterline.

Underwater venues of this nature are unheard of on this scale and DOT has developed the technology to be as attractive as possible to potential investors. Each structure is altered to the specific site coastline and depth of water, and can be easily extended or redeveloped by removing or adding additional discs. There is even the option to construct an entire resort out of these innovative discs. One of the upper plates has the ability to be used as a helipad and a ship’s radio system, high-speed internet access and satellite telephones provide the necessary amenities for those travelling on business.

Bogdan Gutkowski, President of BIG INVEST Group, furthers: “Water Discus Hotel project opens many new fields of development for the hotel and tourism sector, housing and city sector in the coastal off-shore areas, as well as new opportunities for ecology support by creation of new underwater ecosystems and activities on underwater world protection. Additionally we would like to create here in the UAE the international environmental programme and centre of the Underwater World Protection – with Water Discus Hotel as a laboratory tool for oceans and seas environment protection and research.”

Calamari Tacos

Seared, citrus, soy and ginger marinated squid served in corn tortillas with sweet onion and cilantro relish and a tasty orange salsa.

Serving Time:

• Prep Time: 15 minutes
• Cook Time: 10 minutes
• Total Time: 25 minutes

Ingredients:

• 1 1/2 pound squid, sliced
• 1 orange, juice
• 1 lime, juice
• 2 cloves garlic, chopped
• 1 thumb ginger, grated
• 1 tablespoon soy sauce
• 1/2 teaspoon sesame oil
• 1 tablespoon chipotle chili powder or gochugaru (Korean chili pepper flakes)
• 1 tablespoon oil
• 12 corn tortillas, lightly toasted
• 1 1/2 cups onion and cilantro relish
• 1 cup salsa naranja
• 4 tablespoons toasted sesame seeds

Directions:

1. Mix the squid in the lime juice,orange juice, garlic, ginger, soy sauce,  sesame oil and chili powder for 35 minutes.
2. Heat the oil in a pan over high heat.
3. Add the squid and saute until cooked, about 3-4 minutes.
4. Arrange tacos with the squid on the tortillas topped with onion and cilantro relish, salsa naranja and toasted sesame seeds.
5. Now enjoy the tasty Calamari Tacos.

As construction continues, the rebuilt One World Trade Center has quickly become a prominent fixture in the New York City skyline, overtaking the Empire State Building to become New York’s tallest skyscraper this week at 1,271 feet. The milestone is a preliminary one. Workers are still adding floors to the Freedom Tower, and it isn’t expected to reach its full height for at least another year, at which point will be the tallest building in the Western Hemisphere and the third-tallest building in the world by pinnacle height, with its spire reaching a symbolic 1,776 feet.

However, its overall roof height, at 1,368 feet will still be 82 feet shorter than the roof of Chicago’s 108-story Willis Tower. The building’s structure is expected to top out sometime in late spring or early summer of 2012, whereupon its 408-foot radio antenna will be installed. At an estimated cost of $3.8 billion, the tower is also the most expensive single building in the world at the moment.

The 104-story tall skyscraper is being constructed in the northwest corner of the 16-acre World Trade Center site, occupying the location where the original 8-story 6 World Trade Center once stood.
